While many students do support the causes wristbands often represent, many others likely wear the wristbands as a fashion statement.
For proof that wristbands have transcended their humble beginnings, one need look no further than the Internet. What started out as a simple silicone wristband has been turned into a design copied by jewelers to make products that can sell for hundreds of dollars. Fashionistas and jewelry designers have embraced the idea of the wristband without necessarily adopting the cause the wristband originally represented.
But for many people, the message a silicone wristband represents is at least as important as the wristband’s appearance. Demonstrating a commitment to a cause is a part of who they are.
Silicone wristbands also function to foster a sense of belonging, the idea of being a part of something beyond just oneself. While the bejeweled imitations demonstrate a sense of exclusivity, the very ubiquity of the original silicone wristband denotes the wearer as part of a common cause.
